New York will become the first state to force advertisers to disclose the use of artificial intelligence to replace human actors under a law signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul on Thursday.
The measure (S.B. 8420A) applies to AI-made avatars in all forms of media, including social media, which don’t impersonate real people with exceptions for audio ads, translations, and promotions for creative works such as movies made with the technology. It takes effect in 180 days. Violators face potential fines as high as $5,000 per instance.
