Lyft Accused of Misclassifying Massachusetts Drivers (1)

Lyft Inc. is accused in a new lawsuit of misclassifying all of its drivers in Massachusetts as independent contractors so it can deny them minimum wage, reimbursement for gas and other expenses, and overtime pay.

The proposed class action was filed by Melody Cunningham Sept. 17 in federal court in Boston. It alleges that Lyft drivers are employees under Massachusetts law and that by mislabeling them, the company can require drivers to pay their own business expenses, including vehicle maintenance, insurance, fuel costs, and smart phone and other data expenses.
