Johns Hopkins University and the California Institute of Technology have agreed to settle for a total of $35.3 million in a case accusing elite universities of reducing financial aid packages and manipulating the admissions system to favor wealthy students.
Plaintiffs asked the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois on Friday to preliminarily approve the deal, which would bring the total monetary amount of settlements in the case to nearly $320 million. Caltech has agreed to pay $16.8 million and Johns Hopkins will pay $18.5 million.
