Google, Meta Agree South Africa Remedies After Antitrust Review

Alphabet Inc.’s Google and Meta Platforms Inc. agreed to remedial measures in South Africa after an inquiry by the authorities into anti-competitive practices that the antitrust watchdog said hurt domestic media companies.

Google and its video-streaming unit YouTube agreed to a 688 million-rand ($40 million) media-support package that will fund national, community and vernacular media in the country, the Competition Commission of South Africa said in a statement on Thursday. The funds will go toward content licensing, innovation grants and capacity-building measures, it said.
