The Federal Trade Commission ordered drug purchasing companies Zinc Health Services and Ascent Health Services to provide information on their business practices, escalating the agency’s investigation into pharmacy benefit managers.
Zinc operates as a “group purchasing organization” that negotiates drug rebates for CVS Caremark, a unit of CVS Health Corp. Ascent operates as a GPO for Express Scripts, Prime Therapeutics, Envolve Pharmacy Solutions, and Humana Pharmacy Solutions.
The antitrust regulator has been investigating pharmacy benefit managers (PBM) since June 2022, concerned about their influence over drug prices and choice for consumers.
