Ford, VW, Fiat Face Antitrust Fines in Brazil

The Superintendent General (SG) of Brazil’s antitrust agency, Cade, has recommended that Ford Motor Do Brasil S.A., Volkswagen do Brazil Ltda. and Fiat Chrysler Automoveis Brasil Ltda. be fined for abusing patent rights in order to block independent auto parts firms from manufacturing and selling replacement parts to car owners.

The SG said the three companies’ conduct excluded thousands of independent rival manufacturers from the parts replacement market, giving each a monopoly over parts for their own vehicles.

The agency heard from a trade association for auto parts firms, Anfape, which had first complained about the alleged misconduct in 2007. ...
