A FIFA and U.S. Soccer Federation Inc. policy that prevents foreign professional soccer leagues from playing matches in the U.S. could violate federal antitrust laws, the Justice Department warned.
“We specifically are concerned that FIFA could violate U.S. antitrust laws by restricting the territory in which teams can play league games,” the DOJ said in a letter sent to the athletic organizations in March. Major soccer promoter Relevent Sports LLC, which is suing U.S. Soccer, publicly disclosed the DOJ letter in a court filing Tuesday.
