Thousands of students secured class status in a lawsuit accusing private universities, including Penn and Cornell, of fixing the price of financial aid, escalating legal exposure for the defendants that haven’t settled.
Judge Matthew F. Kennelly of the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in a Monday order granted the plaintiffs’ motion for certification for a class of more than 74,000 class members who submitted claims.
A trial is set for November, where student plaintiffs will face off against nonsettling defendants Penn, Cornell, the University of Notre Dame, Georgetown University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
