Arcelik’s European Whirlpool Deal Set for In-Depth UK Probe (1)

Turkish household manufacturer Arcelik AS’s takeover of Whirlpool Corp.’s European major domestic appliance line faces a UK probe over concerns the deal could hamper competition in a British market worth more than £3.8 billion ($4.7 billion).

The Competition and Markets Authority said on Wednesday the deal to create the UK’s largest individual supplier of washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers and cooking appliances could result in a “substantial lessening of competition.”

The regulator set a deadline of March 26 to rule on the tie up. The watchdog can approve the deal with conditions or decide to block it.
