The US government is stepping into a private price-fixing lawsuit in support of a renter’s claim that a property management software company conspired with landlords to raise rents.
Washington state renter Mckenna Duffy sued software company Yardi Systems Inc. and more than a dozen property owners in September, alleging they colluded to increase rents by using Yardi’s algorithmic pricing tool. The statement of interest, filed Friday by the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission, is the latest effort by federal regulators to scrutinize rental pricing software amid a slew of suits alleging firms used artificial intelligence to fix prices. ...
