The fracture between the US and Europe in a relationship that has defined global politics since the second World War was crystallized in a White House national security release, which also lambasted Europe along economic and cultural lines.

President Donald Trump’s National Security Strategy, publishedovernight and personally signed by the US leader, veers significantly from the mid-20th century global order, warning that the continent faces “civilizational erasure” due to decades of economic decline as well as political and cultural failures.
