Senate Working on Short-Term Spy Powers Extension, Thune Says

The Senate is working on a 45-day extension of controversial spy powers before a looming deadline, Senate Majority Leader John Thune said.

Senate Republicans are aiming move the short-term patch after the House passed a three-year extension. The House is sending a separate ban on a Central Bank Digital Currency with FISA as one bill to the Senate, which senators say they wouldn’t be able to pass. Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which allows US intelligence agencies to collect the communications of foreigners overseas, is set to lapse after Thursday.
