The Michigan Supreme Court on Wednesday approved a rule aimed at curbing US Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s ability to make arrests in state courthouses.
Parties, lawyers, and subpoenaed witnesses can’t be arrested based on civil cases “while going to, attending, and returning from the places they are required to attend” for a legal proceeding, says the rule, which takes effect Friday. Court officers and jurors will also enjoy similar protections.
Several other states and jurisdictions have limited civil arrest power at courthouses in response to ICE activity. The Michigan justices fast-tracked the proposal after making it public last November. ...
