Maryland Youth Privacy Requirements Signal Growing State Trend
Maryland’s new privacy law is forcing tech companies to examine how they treat youth data, with a potential wave of new proposals expected from state legislatures next year.
The Maryland Kids Code, which took effect Oct. 1, restricts how businesses can collect and process data from minors online. It’s modeled on California’s first-in-the-nation law requiring tech companies to prioritize a child’s best interest when designing online products. But unlike the California law — and similar laws in other states — Maryland has yet to face litigation from the tech industry.
