Virginia updated its withholding methods, effective July 1, following passage of its 2025 budget amendments.
The standard deduction amount increased to $8,750 from $8,500 for single filers and to $17,500 from $17,000 for married persons filing jointly, according to the state’s Employer Withholding Instructions.
The increase in the standard deduction is scheduled to expire after tax year 2026 and revert to the previous standard deduction amounts of $3,000 for single filers and $6,000 for married couples filing jointly, which were in effect as of tax year 2019, according to the instructions.
