Prop. 22 Fight Back in Court as California Seeks to Revive Law

The state of California and backers of Proposition 22 urged an appeals court to overturn a ruling that struck down the voter-approved ballot measure allowing gig companies to classify ride-hail and delivery drivers as independent contractors.

Prop. 22, which was bankrolled by Uber Technologies Inc., Lyft Inc., DoorDash Inc. and Instacart Inc., was approved by California voters in Nov. 2020. The measure was a carveout from Assembly Bill 5, a law that codified a three-part legal test that makes it hard for companies to classify drivers as contractors.
