Social Security Commissioner Frank Bisignano lauded the $3.4 trillion fiscal tax package bill passed by the US House this week for providing tax relief to millions of older Americans.

“This is a historic step forward for America’s seniors,” Bisignano wrote in the email Friday. The administration said that 90% of Social Security recipients will no longer pay federal income taxes on their benefits.

Bisignano took the reins at Social Security — the agency responsible for paying benefits to some 72 million people — in May after being confirmed by the Senate.
