Democrats sought to turn the economy under President Donald Trump, once a strength, into a weakness at a Thursday hearing with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
The Treasury secretary was on Capitol Hill for a second day of lawmaker questions, where he received an icy reception from House Ways and Means Committee Democrats. The way Republicans tell it, the US economy is humming along thanks to the 2025 tax-and-spending law. But Democrats painted a darker picture as they questioned Bessent on rising inflation, gas prices, and groceries.
