Russia Shortens Period for Tax Residency Amid Pandemic

Individuals spending from 90 to 182 days inclusive in Russia will have the right to claim tax residency this year, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov says at government meeting on Thursday.

  • Initiative, contained in amendments to tax legislation, would allow people to request residency in free form when submitting personal income tax return
  • “Some citizens didn’t have the opportunity to return to Russia for objective reasons -- from a business trip, vacation, from school or after treatment,” Finance Ministry says in statement
  • Initiative applies to both foreign and Russian citizens, ministry says by message in response to request for comment
