New Zealand plans to abolish petrol tax for light vehicles and replace it with electronic road user charges, Transport Minister Chris Bishop says in emailed statement.

  • Will eventually see all vehicles pay based on actual road use — including weight — regardless of fuel type
  • The transition will happen in stages, beginning with legislative and regulatory reform to modernize the current Road User Charges system and enable private sector innovation
