Millions at Risk of Losing Covid-Era Tax Refunds, Advocate Says

Tens of millions of taxpayers are running out of time to claim a refund or for the chance to reduce penalties for late filing from the Covid-19 era, the National Taxpayer Advocate said in a new blog post Thursday.

The partial refund won’t be automatic and taxpayers generally will have until July 10 to request it. National Taxpayer Advocate Erin Collins wants the IRS to publicize the issue more, extend the deadline by six months, provide relief systemically, and create a portal to submit related claims.
