Math Professor’s Tax Return, Foreign Bank Convictions Upheld (1)

The government’s evidence that an Illinois math professor filed false tax returns and failed to report a Chinese bank account was sufficient to support his convictions, an appeals court ruled Tuesday.

Mingqing Xiao, a long-time math professor at Southern Illinois University, was acquitted of wire fraud and false statement charges that emerged out of an FBI investigation into his grant applications, but convicted of the tax and reporting crimes.

The US District Court for the Southern District of Illinois sentenced Xiao to one year of probation and ordered him to pay $2,400 in costs and a fine.
