The IRS’s partnership with the private sector to help taxpayers file returns for free is seeing a 4% bump and is expected to surge in the tax season’s last weeks, the program’s leader said.
The program known as Free File, where the IRS and a group of tax preparation companies help taxpayers file without paying a fee, has so far seen an uptick from last year in usage and a 3% increase including fillable forms. The increase comes after Republicans fulfilled their years-long goal of dissolving the agency’s own free filing tool Direct File.
