The IRS released interim final rules Monday decreasing the user fee a tax preparer pays when applying for an identification number.
The rules (RIN 1545-BR55) drop the user fee to $10 from $11 for preparers applying or renewing their tax identification number, after taking into account a 2023 court opinion that ruled the fees were too high. The rules also maintain the additional $8.75 fee for payment to a third-party contractor.
Tax preparers include their given identification number on a return, statement, or other documents submitted to the IRS.
