The IRS plans to open its pilot of an agency-run free e-filing tool to all eligible users on March 12 across the 12 pilot states once testing of the platform is complete, an agency official said Friday.
Ahead of that wider opening, starting March 4, the Direct File program will be available for new users to start their returns 24 hours a day, when a message at the top of directfile.irs.gov indicates that Direct File is open, the IRS official said.
