Before the landmark U.S. Supreme Court South Dakota v. Wayfair decision last year, retailers warned of a “sky is falling” scenario with massive compliance costs and businesses struggling to adapt to a new regime of states being able to tax remote sellers.
That nightmare turned into a reality for some desperate retailers, based on an interstate commerce association survey that indicated 56% of respondents said they have lost revenue because of the decision. Some reported compliance costs in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
