Hungary Urges Alibaba to Drop ‘Misleading’ Local Surcharge

Feb. 9, 2026, 3:27 PM UTC

The Hungarian Ministry of National Economy called on Alibaba to stop adding a 4.5% “Hungary surcharge” to purchases by local customers and to clarify the fee hasn’t been sanctioned by the government.

It also instructed the country’s national agencies for consumer protection and tax administration to investigate the Chinese online platform for potentially unfair commercial practices.

“There is no and has never been any agreement between the Hungarian state and Alibaba on charging a ‘Hungary surcharge’, and the practice of misleading consumers is unacceptable,” the ministry wrote in a press release Sunday.
