Exxon Mobil Seeks Longer List of Chemicals Hit by Superfund Tax

March 15, 2022, 8:46 PM UTC

Multinational oil and gas giant Exxon Mobil Corp. urged the IRS to add a dozen chemicals to a list of substances subject to a recently revived Superfund tax, warning that without changes importers would have a “competitive advantage” over domestic manufacturers.

The bipartisan infrastructure law enacted last fall brought back long-defunct excise taxes on domestically produced and imported chemicals, used to fund cleanups of some of the nation’s most contaminated land. The IRS late last year identified 101 chemicals (Notice 2021-66) that will be subject to the tax on imports.
