Australia Seeks Input on Tax to Compel Big Tech to Support News

Australia is seeking input on the design of a tax meant to push big tech platforms to support news outlets.

The Australian Treasury issued a consultation Wednesday on the design of the News Bargaining Incentive, which would charge digital platforms that refuse to enter or renew commercial agreements with Australian news outlets to publish their content.

The charge would be offset for platforms that agree to do so. Australia said it doesn’t intend to raise revenue from the policy.
