Rhode Island Legislature Enacts Law Clarifying Tax Classification for City of Providence Homestead Exemption

The Rhode Island General Assembly July 14 enacted a law clarifying the tax classification for the city of Providence’s homestead exemption for property tax purposes. The law was enacted without executive approval. The law includes measures prohibiting the city from authorizing the homestead exemption provision within Class 1 property, including: 1) residential real estate with less than five dwelling units; 2) land classified as open space; 3) dwellings on leased land including mobile homes; and 4) residential properties containing partial commercial or business uses.
