Latest EU Energy Tax Bill Keeps Airline, Shipping Exemptions

The latest version of a bill that would overhaul the EU’s fuel and electricity tax regime has maintained controversial exemptions on aviation and maritime fuel.

The bill, known as the Energy Tax Directive, aims to tax dirtier fuels and incentivize cleaner sources of energy.

Poland, which holds the EU’s rotating presidency, circulated the latest version of the bill Monday. It made mostly technical changes to the text, which was seen by Bloomberg. The bill will be discussed by EU envoys on Jan. 30.
