Block Win Over Atlanta Tax Stands as State Top Court Skips Case

Digital payments company Block Inc. will get a $539,000 refund of Atlanta occupation taxes after the Georgia Supreme Court declined to review the city’s loss.

Atlanta asked the justices to reverse an appeals court ruling that it improperly calculated the tax by allocating all of the company’s $235 million in 2016-2018 revenue from Georgia customers to the city. The trial court found Block—whose businesses include the payment systems Square and CashApp—owed the city only $20,000 for its share of the revenue, and ordered the city to refund the remaining $520,000 it paid under protest, plus interest.
