Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy (R) called on lawmakers to enact the state’s first-ever sales tax to help address a budget gap caused in part by declining revenue from the oil and gas industry.
Dunleavy proposed legislation (SB 227) Monday, implementing his comprehensive fiscal plan for addressing a projected $1.5 billion deficit for fiscal year 2026. The legislation includes a full-year 2% levy on most retail purchases, with an additional 2 percentage points added on between April 1 and Sept 30 to bring the total levy to 4% during the peak tourism season.
