A group representing so-called “accidental Americans” sued the State Department Tuesday, alleging the department has dragged its feet on reducing the high fee that people must pay to renounce their US citizenship.
The Association of Accidental Americans is seeking to compel the State Department to issue final regulations reducing the $2,350 renunciation fee to $450, a reduction the department indicated in 2023 that it would make. Not doing so has led to a “regulatory limbo” that harms Americans living abroad and allows the State Department to avoid judicial scrutiny over the matter, the association alleges.
