UK to Give Companies Advice, Assurance on R&D Tax Relief Claims

The UK tax authority plans to roll out a pilot to provide more certainty for research and development tax relief in a bid to tackle errors and fraud in the system.

From next Spring, small and medium sized companies can ask HMRC to clarify and confirm elements of their R&D tax relief claims are correct, the Treasury announced as part of the UK’s 2025 budget.

The pilot is the result of a consultation on R&D advance assurance that HMRC launched in March. Stakeholders called for more accessible and focused advice, mainly for the high-risk portions of claims.
