UK Tax Authority Sets Plans for Enhancing Tax Software Standards

The UK tax authority’s plans to strengthen standards for tax software will focus on accuracy, reducing errors, and misuse and fraud prevention.

His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs will codify the strengthened standards that will apply to all third-party software providers whose products integrate with its systems, it said in a policy paper Thursday.

HMRC already sets standards for certain third-party software and said it now plans to strengthen them as their usage grows. In 2024-25, around 90% of tax returns were submitted via third-party software, it said.
