UK Considers Mandatory Certification for Plastic Tax Exemptions

The UK is exploring mandatory certification for businesses that claim exemption from a tax designed to reduce plastic packaging use.

Currently, the documentary evidence required to support the plastic packaging tax exemption claims is resource-intensive and creates uncertainty for businesses, His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs said Monday in a proposal paper, open for public consultation until Aug. 10.

Businesses using plastic packaging with at least 30% recycled plastic can claim exemption from the plastic packaging tax, which charges £228.82 ($306) per ton.
