South African Tax Chief to Step Down Early Next Year, BT Reports

Edward Kieswetter will step down as commissioner of the South African Revenue Service early next year, Business Times reported on Sunday.

Kieswetter, who took over as head of the tax office in May 2019, was tasked with rebuilding the institution after a commission of inquiry found the previous permanent commissioner dismantled it through mismanagement and alleged corruption.

Under Kieswetter, tax authorities implemented a revenue-recovery project, modernized systems and tax collections exceeded budget estimates in at least four fiscal years. President Cyril Ramaphosa extended the commissioner’s initial five-year contract through April 2026.
