IRS to Refund Class of Tax Preparers $168.7 Million in Fees (1)

The IRS will refund tax preparation professionals a total of $168.7 million in fees collected as part of their applications for Preparer Tax Identification Numbers, partly settling a decade-long class action.

Judge Royce C. Lamberth of the US District Court for the District of Columbia ordered the government to make the payment to claims administrator Verita Global LLC, which will then process claims, less court fees, for individuals who’d paid fees to obtain PTINs from 2011 to 2017. Verita previously indicated that about 77,500 individuals could be eligible for fee refunds.
