IRS Asks Fifth Circuit to Let ‘John Doe Summons’ Ruling Stand

The Fifth Circuit shouldn’t rehear a Texas law firm’s challenge to an IRS summons seeking information about unidentified taxpayers because a three-judge panel already correctly decided the issue, the government argued in a filing.

The IRS issued the “John Doe” summons to the Taylor Lohmeyer Law Firm PLLC after finding the firm helped one of its clients set up offshore structures used to hide $5 million in unreported income, the agency said. The summons sought information about other clients who received similar services from the firm, according to the agency.
