Hundreds of workers rallied in Jakarta on Thursday to demand higher wages and lower taxes, fewer than expected amid tighter security following violent protests earlier this week that signal growing discontent with the government.

Police deployed more than 4,500 personnel in the capital, erecting barricades around the parliament building and diverting traffic as protesters arrived holding up banners and shouting demands. The parliamentary complex was largely quiet, with lawmakers told to work from home.
