Groups Urge HMRC to Delay Mandatory Tax Agent Registration

The UK should defer mandatory registration of tax agents to address flaws in proposed legislation that could harm the tax system, multiple tax and accounting groups said.

A bill granting His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs regulatory powers over tax agents should be changed to ensure independent oversight over the office and proper safeguards for the registration process, according to the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, Chartered Institute of Taxation and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.

The proposal should be pushed off until at least 2027 to tweak the legislation, ICAEW and CIOT said.
