EU Parliament Warns Against Dissolution of Tax Cooperation Fund

A key EU parliamentary committee has called for new safeguards to ensure that EU-funded tax work continues despite a change in how it’s funded.

In an opinion dated March 5 and published Monday, the Economic Affairs Committee said it supported the European Commission’s proposal to pool separate funds that support work on tax cooperation, anti-fraud, and IT systems.

But “this increased flexibility does not provide sufficient guarantees in terms of transparency, accountability, and democratic scrutiny,” it said.

In particular, it said, integrating the Fiscalis program that funds national tax cooperation into a broader framework “raises specific concerns.”
