Carbon Pricing Covers Growing Share of Emissions, OECD Reports

The amount of carbon emissions subject to a tax or other pricing mechanism in 79 countries increased by 11 percentage points from 2018 to 2023, the OECD reported Thursday.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development’s report on effective carbon rates in 79 nations responsible for 82% of greenhouse gas emissions found that in 2023, 44% of emissions faced a carbon tax, a fuel excise tax, or an emissions trading system price—a figure that rose from 33% in 2018.
