Brazil Politics: Talks Resume But IOF Tax Deal Remains Elusive

Finance Minister Fernando Haddad met with congressional leaders Tuesday in an attempt to reach a compromise on a dispute over so-called IOF taxes, but the results were inconclusive, according to O Globo.

It was the first meeting between Haddad, lower house Speaker Hugo Motta and Senate chief Davi Alcolumbre since the crisis began with the congressional overturn of a government decree seeking to raise taxes on some financial transactions, the report said. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s government responded to the blocking of its decree by appealing to the Supreme Court, which has ordered mediation between the sides. ...
