The Trump administration is seeking to shrink base discretionary spending at the health department by more than a quarter, according to budget documents released Friday.
The so-called “skinny” budget request would reduce the Health and Human Services Department’s discretionary spending to $93.8 billion in fiscal year 2026 from $127 billion enacted in fiscal year 2025, which represents a $33.3 billion—or 26.2%—decrease. The push to slash dollars comes as the department undergoes a structural overhaul, cutting 10,000 employees and combining several agencies.
