Union Pacific Files New Bid to Merge With Norfolk Southern (1)

A battle over the future of American freight transportation entered a new stage on Thursday after Union Pacific Corp. and Norfolk Southern Corp. refiled their application with a federal body to form the nation’s first coast-to-coast rail network.

The Surface Transportation Board, which oversees rail mergers, has demanded an unprecedented volume of documents from the two companies after rejecting their first application in January over a lack of details, including data showing a deal could spur industry growth as much as the two railroads claim. A final decision could happen in mid-2027.
