Donald Trump called on Senate Majority Leader John Thune to fire the Senate’s top rules keeper after one of her decisions thwarted the president’s efforts to attach voter identification legislation to a budget package.
Trump on Monday blasted Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough for treating Republicans “horribly” in her rulings affecting legislation. MacDonough, who has served through both Democratic and Republican control and has frustrated each party’s partisans, also ruled against several Democratic proposals for the bill.
But Thune defended MacDonough, telling reporters at the Capitol that her rulings “break both ways” and the parliamentarian has “a hard job.”
