The federal government will withhold at least $40 million in funding to punish California over its issuance of commercial drivers licenses to non-residents, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Wednesday.
The action follows an investigation that found the state failed to comply with English Language Proficiency standards the Trump administration announced in April. California could lose funds awarded by the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program, according to a press release.
“California is the only state in the nation that refuses to ensure big rig drivers can read our road signs and communicate with law enforcement,” Duffy said in a press release. ...
