Trump Shipbuilding Push Against China Advances During Shutdown

A Senate Commerce panel on Tuesday will question experts on expanding domestic shipbuilding as President Donald Trump‘s push to make the U.S. more competitive with Beijing enters a critical phase.

The U.S. manufactures 0.1% of the world’s commercial vessels while China makes the majority of them, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Trump aims to boost the US role in trans-oceanic commerce through an April 9 executive order and imposed port fees and tariffs on Chinese vessels and products.
